William Edward Polston, Jr., known to all his family and friends as Papa, went to his heavenly resting place in the early morning hours on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. He was 91 years old and resided in Newport News.  Born in Robertson County, North Carolina to the late William E Polston, Sr. and Lornia Mildred Tatum Polston, he was one of eight children, Clyde Willis, Mildred Berlin, Helen Elizabeth, Joseph David (JD) Franklin Dewitt (FD), Johnny Perlis, and Brenda Gail.

William worked at the Newport News Shipyard beginning September of 1962 to May 1993, retiring with 30 years of service as a Pipe Fitter. He was a loving husband, father, grand/great grandfather, and a friend to all his entire life.

He was preceded in death on February 20, 2013 by his wife of 62 years, Marcella Wilson Polston.  They had two children together, Edward B Polston, who also preceded him in death, and Deborah L. Polston, who survives him. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jan Michael "Mike" Polston, Lance Polston, Shondra L. Williams, Thomas J. Lonergan IIII, and Christina M. Lonergan; eight great grandchildren, Christopher, Cameron, Chase, Caelen, Jacob, Olivia, Alana, and Trevin.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 PM Friday, October 8, 2021 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 9, 2021 at First Baptist Church, Newport News.  Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
