Obituary

William "Bill" George Middleton, a man of unyielding strength, unmatched loyalty, and quiet heroism, left this world on January 6, 2025, at the age of 92. Known for his towering presence in every room he entered, Bill was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and soldier whose legacy will resonate through the generations he leaves behind.

Born on January 15, 1932, Bill's life was defined by service and sacrifice. For 30 years, he served his country with honor and distinction as a Command Sergeant Major in the United States Army. His journey took him through the heart of the Korean and Vietnam wars, where he earned Purple Heart, Bronze Star medal, and the Legion of Merit for acts of courage, leadership, and duty. Bill didn't just wear his military uniform; he lived it. His valor and commitment shaped the men, women and children he led, leaving behind a trail of respect, admiration, and friendships that span decades.

Though Bill's military honors are impressive, it was his character that left the deepest impression on all who knew him. He taught lessons not just through words, but through his actions. Whether it was guiding his family through life's challenges, offering his wisdom during difficult times, or simply sitting quietly with those he loved, Bill showed what it meant to be strong, steady, and compassionate.

But Bill was more than a soldier. After retiring from the Army, he continued to serve his country in a different capacity. He worked at the Newport News Shipyard, where he became a fixture in the logistics department for Navy ships and submarines. His expertise and attention to detail helped ensure that the vessels and crews were fully prepared for the challenges of service at sea. Bill's dedication to his work mirrored his commitment to his military career, and his contributions left an indelible mark on the shipyard and its people.

Bill was also a devoted husband to Dorothy; the love of his life with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. Together, they weathered storms, celebrated victories, and created a family that now carries his spirit forward. Bill was a rock for his daughter Carol, a guiding hand for his granddaughter Heather, and a loving great-grandfather to Holly and Tristen.

In his later years, Bill often reflected on the many adventures he had lived, from military campaigns to family gatherings, and he never missed an opportunity to share a story, offer advice, or laugh heartily with those he held dear.

Bill is survived by his beloved Dorothy, daughter- Carol Middleton, granddaughter - Heather Nelson (Scott), great-granddaughter - Holly Giezey (Christopher), great-grandson Tristen Giezey, and countless others whose lives he touched. He was predeceased by his son – Mark Middleton, parents, sister and brother.

As Bill is laid to rest with the respect he earned through decades of service, his memory will live on—not only in the medals and accolades, but in the hearts of his family and the stories they will tell for generations.

Bill Middleton's life was a life well-lived. His legacy, like his spirit, will endure.
