Obituary

Former New York  resident Sylvia M. Dixon, 90, passed peacefully, July 7, 2023, in Virginia.

Sylvia Dixon was born Sylvia May Campbell, April 15,1933, in Trelawny, Jamaica West Indies to Phillip and Josephine Campbell. She was one of eleven children and  affectionately known as Ms. Rose to the Kingston Community and Ethel by some. With a limited education, Sylvia accomplished anything she set her mind to.

She moved to Kingston, Jamaica  and married Henry Norman Lewis and later gave birth to five children, but only four would survive as Michael Washington Lewis did not. Henry Lewis then passed at an early age.  She later married Cecil Dixon and then later divorced.

She worked hard to care for her family and became a Dental Assistant. This endeavor would afford her the opportunity to move to the United States and gain citizenship. During that time, her goal was to subsequently bring her four children to the United States as well and for them to also become citizens.

Once in the United States, she lived in New York, where she worked as a housekeeper, saving her money to board her children still living in Jamaica in hopes that one day they would be reunited in New York. In January of 1970 that day came when her family would once again be together.

In the years to follow, she became a Nurse's Aide and Real Estate Agent. She been instrumental in mentoring many women by sharing financial management knowledge regarding homeownership and family sustainability throughout the years. She and her influence will be missed by countless others. May she rest in peace.

She is survived by her brother Leonard Campbell and wife Gwendolyn, her four children Jean Schlegel, Yvonne Cook, Audley Lewis, wife Vicky Lewis and Lorna Lewis Tate. Sylvia was also blessed and survived by her nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 14, 2023 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home at 11 AM with a funeral service following at 11:30 AM. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

A repass will be at the Denbigh Community Center, 15198 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23607 (757-812-7900) from 1:30 to 3:30 PM.
