Obituary

Steven Craig Black, 63, passed away at Riverside Regional Medical Center on March 17, 2023 after a short illness. Steve was the son of Mary Koskinas Black and William "Bill" C. Black. Steve lived most of his youth in the Northampton area and graduated from Bethel High School. He furthered his education at Thomas Nelson Community College (Associates Degree in Engineering Technology), Christopher Newport University (Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration), and he pursued a Master's degree at Old Dominion University (Masters of Business Administration).

Steve loved baseball and football, as he was a lifelong Chicago Cubs and Washington (formerly Redskins) Commanders fan (and seemed to know every statistic regarding those teams). He was involved as a player in the Northampton Little League, Pony League, Senior League teams, and Clayton Cook American Legion team. He later coached teams for Parkview Little League and Denbigh Pony League (as well as the Peninsula Mariners).

Steve was also an avid music lover. He enjoyed listening to Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, The Beatles, and especially his favorite artist, Bruce Springsteen. He would enjoy listening to those artists while taking his sons to baseball/basketball events. A fond memory of his sons was that he would blast the music he loved while handing out candy on Halloween.

He worked for over 30 years for the Newport News Shipyard, from which he eventually retired.

Steven is predeceased by his brother Charles Adam Black; his mother Mary Koskinas Black Munger; and his stepmother Janet Strickler Black. He is survived by his father William C. Black; former spouse Jennifer Smith Black; sons, Adam and Ryan Black (Emily); and three grandchildren, Maddux, Teagan, and Tenley Black. Additional survivors from Morgantown, WV are his special brothers, Scott Strickler (Donna) and their daughter Emily, and Todd Strickler (Patty).

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 PM, Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at First Church Ministries, 410 Flannery O'Connor Street, Newport News, VA 23606 by Rev. Robert Mosely. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Northampton Little League, P. O. Box 9029, Hampton, VA 23670.
