Ssgt, Norman
David Walker, Jr., Usaf, (Ret.)
d. May 19, 2026
Newport News
Norman David Walker Jr., 91, of Newport News, VA, peacefully passed away on May 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of family. Norman was born on April 18, 1935, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Charity Jordan Walker Pettis and Norman David Walker Sr., as the eldest of nine children.
At just nine years old, he began delivering newspapers in Chicago — a reflection of the dedication and work ethic that would define his life. Norman proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant after twenty years of faithful service. Following his military retirement, Norman worked at the Newport News Shipyard for twenty years, leading to a second retirement. He also served as a custodian for the Newport News War Museum and associated facilities, where he faithfully worked until retiring for a third time at 82 years old.
At the age of 40, Norman accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, a decision that became the foundation of his life and an example to many that it is never too late to give your life to Christ. He faithfully attended Joynes Road Church of God in Hampton, VA, for more than 50 years. Whether leading Sunday School classes, driving the church van, cleaning the church, praying for the sick, or lending a helping hand, Norman was known for his strong spirit, steady presence, sense of humor, and faith in action.
Norman (better known to her as David) married Florence B. Walker and through their nearly 30-year union, their family circle expanded with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who were loved and cherished throughout the years.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sarah Jane Walker; his son, Darryl Walker; stepchildren Beverly Carney, Denise McDowell, Dexter McDowell, and Angelia Carney; and five siblings.
He leaves to cherish his devoted wife, Florence B. Walker; his children, Sarah (Nai) Garcia, Lawrence Walker, and Sherry Walker; stepson Bernard Carney; sisters Charity Walker, Miriam Walker, and Dorcas Walker; along with a loving legacy of 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, extended family, church family, and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, located at 210 Harpersville Rd, Newport News, VA 23601. Viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at Noon. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens, where military honors will be rendered in recognition of Norman's faithful service to his country. A repast will be held at Joynes Road Church of God, located at 31 Joynes Rd, Hampton, VA 23666.
The family would like to thank friends, church family, hospital staff, and W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home for their love, prayers, and support during this time.
