Obituary

Sherry L. Stokes, 69, of Yorktown, Virginia, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026 after a long courageously fought battle with liver disease. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Sherry will be remembered for her warmth, strength and the care she gave to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Born on March 12, 1956 in Newport News, Virginia, Sherry discovered her love for reading and writing at an early age. Throughout her life she wrote many poems and short stories. She was known in her family for the beautiful letters she would write. Sherry worked for over 20 years at Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. She retired at the same time her boss, David L. Peebles, also retired. Sherry would continue to work with Mr. Peebles and his family at Swan Tavern Antiques for the remainder of her life. Sherry's greatest passion was her family. She shared a beautiful life and enduring bond with her husband, John, whose steadfast partnership brought her comfort and joy through all of life's seasons. As a mother and grandmother, Sherry was a force of encouragement and compassion. Her daughters, Whitney and Hannah, and grandson, Sam, were the center of her world. Sherry led by example, showing them the value of perseverance, kindness and faith through both the good times and challenges. Sherry is survived by her beloved husband, John Stokes; daughter Whitney Bauer and husband Brian Bauer; daughter Hannah Manning and husband Brandon Manning; grandson Sam Manning; sister Cindy Epling-Sapienzo; brother-in-law Neil Stokes; nieces Amy Epling-Bradley and Tanya Frank. Sherry's life was defined by courage, strength and a deep love of family. She will be intensely missed and fondly remembered always. There will be a private celebration of life held at a later date for family and close friends.
