Holloman
d. Nov 4, 2020
HAMPTON
Seth Corbett Holloman passed away in Poquoson with family near on November 4, 2020 at age 96.
Seth grew up on his family's farms in Walstonburg, NC and Moultrie, GA with four siblings. Primarily they grew tobacco but also planted corn, soybeans and cotton over the years. In 1940 at the age of 15 he enlisted in the United States Army. After Basic Training on the U.S. mainland, he was assigned to the 25 th Infantry Division, 8 th Field Artillery, Battery C stationed at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Seth was there the morning of December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked the military complex, which included Schofield, at Pearl Harbor. One comment he made about the attack was that they had been using live ammunition in training there and he was wondering "just how real are they going to make this (training)?" He then deployed with the 25 th Infantry Division "Tropic Lightning" as a radioman throughout the islands of the South Pacific for the duration of World War II and was awarded a total of 5 Bronze Stars for his participation in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign. Included in these were the Guadacanal, Central Pacific and Luzon Campaigns.
After the War, Seth returned to Walstonburg, trained as an auto mechanic and worked at a Chevrolet dealership for a short time prior to coming to the Hampton Roads area in 1950. He then joined the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 147 in Norfolk and remained a member for 70 years until his death. Seth, also known as "Smoky" by his Union brothers and sisters, operated various types of heavy equipment on many local construction projects, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. His last and longest place of continuous employment before retirement was at the Amoco Oil Refinery in Yorktown VA.
Seth was also a member of the American Legion Braxton - Perkins Post 25 in Newport News for 56 years. After retirement he became more active with his Army reunion group; and traveled to their social meetings around the country, including the one in Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor 50 th Anniversary Memorial.
Through the years, Seth continued to do all the maintenance work on the family motor vehicles and helped neighbors at times with theirs. In addition to a small vegetable garden, he also enjoyed growing Muscadine grapes in his yard, everywhere he lived. Seth would make wine sometimes and of course kept his lawn mowers and roto-tillers running.
Seth met and married Helen Bluford, an RN, of Newport News in 1951. She survives him along with sons Michael (Margaret) and Don and grandson Austin. A private graveside service with Military Honors was held in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family thanks Seth's caregivers, Riverside Regional Medical Center and especially Bayside of Poquoson Health and Rehabilitation, where he lived for this past year. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
