Sandra Motley
Swain
May 20, 1938 — Apr 11, 2023
Sandra Motley Swain passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
Sandra was born on May 20, 1938 in Danville, Virginia to the late Oakley D. and Eva R. Motley of Chatham, Virginia. She graduated from Chatham High School in 1956 and from Westhampton College in 1960 with a degree in Elementary Education.
After marrying the love of her life, Robert Lee "Bob" Swain, in 1960, she relocated to Newport News where she taught public elementary school and Sunday School at Deer Park Baptist Church. Later she and Bob moved to Immanuel Baptist Church, where she taught for many years in both children's and adult women's Sunday School, and was also a long-time choir member. She and Bob were blessed with two children, whom she lovingly adored and cared for.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Bob, as well as her sister Linda M. Dudley of Winston-Salem, NC; two children, Susan S. Montgomery (Monty) of Newport News, and Robert L. "Rob" Swain (Ashley) of Yorktown; four grandchildren, Caitlin J. Hubler (Henry) of Atlanta, GA, John L. "Logan" Montgomery of Richmond, McKenna L. Swain and Emerson A. Swain, both of Yorktown. She was also excitedly expecting her first great-grandchild in August 2023.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Immanuel Baptist Church, 69 Saunders Road, Newport News. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 AM with Pastor David Teem officiating. Burial will follow the service at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Although she had allergies that kept her from enjoying flowers during her lifetime, the family would welcome either floral expressions of sympathy or donations to her long-time church home, Immanuel Baptist Church, 69 Saunders Road, Newport News, VA 23601.
The family would like to especially thank Sandra's caregivers from Home Instead, who loved and cared for her like their own family.
