Obituary

Sandra "Sandy" Lee Coffey Gregory Lindsay, 79, of Newport News passed away on November 9, 2024 at The Newport, where she had resided the last six months.  She was born in Newport News, Virginia on September 21, 1945 and was the daughter of the late Maude Lee Kirkland Crisp (Eugene) and Roby Elbert Coffey, and granddaughter of Ellis Chasteen and Dessie Jane Kirkland. In addition to her mother, father and grandparents, she was preceded in death by husband Jimmy Wayne Lindsay and brother Marion Clifton "Cliff" Crisp.

Sandy was raised in Almond, North Carolina and attended Swain County High School.  She was proud of her successful career as a Real Estate Broker with Moore Reality and Long & Foster companies.  She never met a stranger and became a friend to everyone.  She was a diehard fan and memorabilia collector of the Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR Earnhardt team.  She was an incredible cook and hosted holidays at her home for all her family, friends and neighbors, which was always exquisitely done.  Her passion for gardening generated beautiful flowers and vegetables, a skill she handed down to both her sons.

Sandy was a dedicated member of Temple Baptist Church and enjoyed Bible study and spending time with her cousin Ramona "Mona" Walker (Bob) reminiscing on growing up together.

To treasure every memory, she leaves behind her two sons, Bobby Clifton Gregory (Karen) and Michael Landon Gregory (Tammy); three grandchildren, Heather Lee Gregory-Pelausa (Orion), Dessie Milenda Novotny (Joe) and Sarah Nicole Gregory (Ryan Marsh); three great-grandchildren, Robert James Novotny, Orson Michael Pelausa and Elizabeth Marie Novotny; two brothers, Robert E. Coffey (Mary-Scott), Eugene Warren Crisp, Jr.; sister-in law Shirley Estep Crisp, and "sister" Pamela Cupp (Ronnie); nephews and nieces, Robert E. Coffey, Jr. (Laura), Joseph Ellis Coffey (Kate), Dr. Katherine Leigh Coffey-Vega (Juan), Stephen Phillip Crisp, Julie Fairbanks, Jennifer Kirk (Jason) and Victoria Crisp (James); and her companion of 23 years Walter Henry Sanderson, Jr.

The family would like to extend deepest gratitude to the staff at The Newport for their faithful and compassionate care.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 beginning at 1 PM with a funeral following at 2 PM in W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
