Robert Howard
Wilks
d. Jul 3, 2025
Robert "Bob" H. Wilks, Master Chief Petty Officer, United States Navy (Retired), passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, at his home, with his devoted wife of 63 years, Norma, by his side.
Born in 1940, Bob—affectionately known as "Papa" to his family—was a graduate of Midland High School in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy. He began his distinguished 28-year career on April 14, 1959, and honorably served until his retirement on September 30, 1987, attaining the rank of Yeoman Master Chief Petty Officer (Surface Warfare), YNCM (SW).
Bob's naval career was marked by dedication, integrity, and a commitment to service that spanned nearly three decades. After completing intensive Vietnamese language training at the Defense Language Institute, West Coast Branch in Monterey, California from April 1966 to March 1967, Bob was deployed to Da Nang, Vietnam, where he served from April 1967 to January 1969 in support of U.S. naval operations during the Vietnam War. His time in-country exemplified the courage and quiet professionalism for which he was known throughout his career.
Following his tour in Vietnam, Bob served aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) from March 1969 to February 1970 and later aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) from July 1980 to July 1983, where he continued to demonstrate steadfast leadership and loyalty to mission and crew.
His career culminated in his appointment as Command Master Chief (CMC) to the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic (SACLANT) in Norfolk, Virginia, from August 1983 to September 1987. In this prestigious NATO role, he served as the senior enlisted advisor, representing and supporting enlisted personnel from across allied naval forces.
After retiring from active duty, Bob continued to serve the nation as a Project/Data Analyst with CONTEL Government Systems. He was respected by colleagues for his strong work ethic, meticulous attention to detail, and dry sense of humor.
At home, Bob was a devoted husband and family man who found joy in working in the yard and tending the garden he built with Norma. A loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he proudly wore black and gold every NFL Sunday. He was a man of few words, quiet strength, and deep love for his family.
He is survived by his loving wife Norma; children Susan Bailey (Bob), Debbie Drivas (Terry), and Bob Wilks, Jr. (Susan); grandchildren Peyton (Michelle), Bryce (Natalie), Christopher (Katie), Nicholas, Jacob, Jason, and Bobby; and great-grandchildren Knox, Ella, Luca, and Logan.
Bob—Dad, Papa, Master Chief—will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, loyal shipmate, and steadfast friend. His legacy of honor, service, and love endures in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Military Ceremony honoring his life and service will be held on Monday, July 21 at 3:00 PM at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
Fair winds and following seas, Master Chief.
