Robert B.
Fleshman
d. Feb 15, 2026
Bob Fleshman (88) passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026 after a short bout with pneumonia. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruby, who is in memory care in Yorktown. Bob is also survived by two children, Robert (Lori) of Fort Myers, FL and Jane Stergin (Gary, deceased) of Yorktown; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his brother George William (Jerry, deceased) of Dillwyn, VA; and sister Ann Webb (Bob) of Fredericksburg, VA.
Bob was born in Healing Springs, VA and moved to the Peninsula after high school where he graduated from the NNS Apprentice School. He then spent his entire career of 40+ years at Newport News Shipbuilding primarily as a draftsman and cost engineer for various systems on aircraft carriers and submarines. He retired in 1999 at age 62 and began a long, very active and very fulfilling retirement with Ruby, first on the Peninsula, then back to the mountains he loved in Staunton, and then back to the Peninsula for his final years. Before and after retirement, Bob was always very active in his local church and in other activities such as Habitat for Humanity.
Bob was perhaps hyperactive by today's standards and was sometimes called Bob the Builder after personally building a second story onto his home and his never-ending house projects over decades at each of his homes. Even in Independent Living for his last 18 months, he kept enough tools to cultivate an unapproved flower garden during daylight hours (he had a rebellious streak and enjoyed the fact that it wasn't approved) and played cards many nights with the Harper's Station card gang.
The family is very grateful to all the good people of Harper's Station - for their friendship over the past 18 months and for their ongoing care for Ruby.
A memorial service will be held at Seaford Baptist Church on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Michael Howard officiating. Bob's family welcomes everyone to a visitation immediately following the service.
