Robert Maddrix,
"Bob" Walker
d. Jan 16, 2025
Hampton
Robert Maddrix "Bob" Walker, a cherished figure and beloved by many, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the early morning hours of Thursday, January 16, 2025. At the age of 77, Bob left behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. His passing marks not just the loss of an individual but also the closing of a chapter filled with love, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Those who were touched by Bob's kindness, generosity, and his gift of laughter will remember him not only for his years but for the profound impact he had on their lives.
Born on August 27, 1947, in Newport News, Virginia, Bob was the beloved son of the late Robert Luther Walker, Jr. and Kathleen Maddrix Walker. He graduated from Newport News High School in 1965 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy the same year. He served 15 months at sea with the Guided Missile Cruiser Columbus, touring the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. During his four years of service to the country he loved, he was stationed and trained at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital as a corpsman as part of the Cardiac Care Unit. He also served at the U.S. Naval Hospital, GTMO Bay, Cuba, and was honorably discharged on October 22, 1969.
After serving his country with unwavering commitment, he dedicated the next fifty-one years of his life to the Newport News Shipyard, where he honed his skills and made invaluable contributions to the field of Nuclear Planning. His tenure at the shipyard culminated in a well-deserved retirement in 2022, marking the end of an era characterized by relentless dedication and expertise. Throughout his long career, he garnered immense respect from colleagues and superiors alike, not only for his exceptional work ethic but also for his exceptional knowledge. His legacy is not just one of longevity; it is a testament to how hard work and passion can shape an entire career while inspiring those around him.
Bob is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Ramona DeHart "Mona" Walker. Together, they shared a bond that was both deep and meaningful, a testament to their enduring love. Additionally, he leaves behind his sweet and loving daughter, Nora Walker Marien (Ty), who brought him immense joy and pride throughout his life. The warmth of their family connection served as a source of strength for him during both good times and challenging moments. However, despite the love that surrounds him now, he is preceded in death by his son, Jason Lake Walker. The loss of Jason was a profound heartbreak for him; it's undeniable that he missed Jason with all his heart.
He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen "Kay" Gray, and their children Steve Gray "Lynn" and Robin Snapp "Randy," along with wonderful great nieces and nephews.
Bob also had a deep affection for Temple Baptist Church, where he forged lasting friendships that enriched his life immeasurably. Despite each challenge he faced while in the hospital, he often expressed an eager and hopeful anticipation to return to the church he loved so dearly.
Though Bob's absence will leave a void in the lives of those fortunate enough to experience his warmth and humor, it is that same wonderful and spontaneous ability to ignite laughter and uplift spirits, that will continue on in the hearts of all who knew him. His greatest legacy is how he could easily transform an ordinary day into one filled with joy and light.
A heartfelt service celebrating the life of Bob will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 11 AM at Temple Baptist Church. This gathering will be officiated by Pastor Wes Taylor, whose compassionate guidance is sure to bring comfort and solace to all in attendance. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception in the Social Hall, providing an opportunity for friends and family to share their memories. Burial will take place in Albert G. Horton Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk on Monday, February 10, 2025 at 10 AM.
