Obituary

Phillip Monroe Brookner, born February 29, 1936, in Blacksburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia. Phillip was a simple man with a big heart. He didn't need much to be happy; good soil, fresh air, a piece of wood to work with, a good book, a stack of magazines, and a road that led north to Maine. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann, with whom he shared a love story measured not in years alone, but in patience, devotion, and deep companionship. Their courtship spanned 31 years, followed by 19 beautiful years of marriage, years shaped by friendship, shared laughter, and a quiet joy that filled the ordinary moments. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Dinkins; his sons, Mark (Heather), and Randy (and Randy's partner, Emily, whom he loved as a daughter); his six grandchildren; Christopher, Justin, Amanda, Jessica, Samantha, and Logan, who knew him lovingly as "Pops;" eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. He is lovingly remembered by his niece, Patti Grella, and his nephew, Michael Dinkins, for whom he held deep affection and gratitude. He was preceded in death by his cherished son, Roger. Phillip worked for 33 years at McDonald's Nursery. It was a fitting place for a man who loved working with his hands and nurturing living things. Gardening was not just a hobby, but a passion, one reflected in the care he took to have the best lawn in the neighborhood. A skilled woodworker, Phillip, created many beautiful, lasting pieces over the years. Some of his most treasured works were the handmade wooden gifts he crafted for each grandchild at their birth, a rocking horse, a dollhouse complete with furniture, and a cradle. These gifts, like Phillip himself, were made with care, purpose, and love, and will be cherished for generations. Maine held a special place in Phillip's heart. It was a place of peace and familiarity, somewhere he returned to whenever he could, alongside Ann and a place that truly felt like home. Phillip lived by a quiet philosophy: "Live simply, leave things better than you found them." He did exactly that, through his work, his kindness, and the way he showed up for those he loved. His legacy is found not in grand gestures, but in steady love, gentle hands, and a life well lived. He taught us a good life is not measured by how loud it is, but by how deeply it is felt. We are better for having loved him.
