Obituary

Peter "Pete", (CB Handle – RePete) Slater, 66, of Gloucester, VA, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 5, 2021 in Williamsburg.

Pete was a native of Norfolk and was one of six fortunate children adopted by Kenneth and Rosalind Slater. Pete spent his childhood in upstate New York (including Fayetteville), Boston, MA, and Norfolk with his parents and older brothers, William (Bill) and Matt. He settled with his family in Hampton where he was loved, yet frequently pestered by his younger siblings Meghan, Robin and Daniel. As a teenager Pete enjoyed working on and racing classic cars, like his Chevy II, Duster and Mustang. Pete was not a fan of formal education but turned his skill and extensive knowledge of cars into a lifelong career as a mechanic. One could certainly call him a self-taught gunsmith as well! He recently retired from Casey Toyota in Williamsburg after many years of service.

Pete enjoyed "Huntin, Racin, Fishin" and was extremely knowledgeable in all three subjects. He was a member of the Ino Hunt Club for more than 32 years where he had many friends and tons of "Hunting stories" to tell. He just loved being "out in the country" and enjoyed the beauty of nature and all of God's creatures.

Pete is survived by his brothers - William Smith of Hampton and Daniel Slater of Newport News; sisters - Meghan Slater of Newport News and Robin Ramey of Gloucester and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Kenneth and Rosalind Slater; a brother Mathew Taro Slater and beloved dog, Lady.

Other than a very occasional bout of the 'grouchies,' he was very sweet and caring, referred to at those times as "SweetPete". He was loved by his family very much. He missed his parents terribly, and so it was only fitting that he died and was reunited with them on his Mother's birthday!

A visitation celebrating his life will be held at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, June 12, 2021, from 4 to 5 PM.  Please wear casual clothing. Camouflage would be appropriate.
