Obituary

Patience Robin Johnson Hinson, 52, passed away on Sunday, March 10, at her home in Newport News following a brave battle with cancer. Her family was by her side to comfort her and bring her peace.

She came into the world with a bang, as lightning struck the house in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Oct. 29, 1971, the day she was born to Gordon Leon Johnson and Linda Faye Woodward. Her early childhood days were filled with adventures such as almost falling in the canal and actually falling into a bucket of fish. She moved with her family to the Deep Creek area of Newport News when she was 7. Her childhood passions included playing and exploring outdoors and attending church with her grandmother. She graduated from Menchville High School in 1989.

Patience devoted her life to her family, working as a homemaker and raising five children. She was known as a mother figure to her children's friends as well, creating a safe haven for young people to feel at home and accepted. The light of Patience's life was her husband of 24 years, David. She helped raise his two sons, Steven and Mathew, as her own, and he welcomed her son, Jonathan, into their loving family. Together they had a son, Joshua, and a daughter, Sadie. The couple showered their children with love, acceptance, laughter, and many wonderful memories.

Friends and family will remember her magnetic presence, her proficiency in problem solving, and her loving concern for others. She was most comfortable in her kitchen, masterfully creating dishes like her famous mac 'n cheese or everyone's favorite sausage gravy and biscuits. She loved the outdoors, insisting on long early drives to the best spots to watch and photograph the sunrise. She should be universally recognized as the inventor of glamping.

Patience was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Johnson; cousins Melissa Rowell and Marie Benitez; aunts Beverly Crow, Pamela Woodward, and Marie Johnson; and uncle Brian Johnson. She is survived by her husband, David Hinson; her parents, Gordon and Linda Johnson; her sister, Dennise Johnson-Carlisle Hochenedel; her brothers, James Johnson and Raleigh Johnson; her children, Jonathan Johnson (Alyssa), Steven Hinson, Mathew Hinson, Joshua Hinson (Sierra), and Sadie Hinson; her step-grandson Tobias Dyson; her cousins Michael Johnson, David Johnson, Davis Johnson Jr., Christopher Johnson, Linda Shaw, Dennis Crow, Christopher Kenyon, and Jason Kenyon; aunts Diana Johnson and Wanda Kenyon; and uncle Davis Johnson Sr.; her nieces Niki, Olivia Johnson, Rebecca Pullem, Amber Crumly, Melissa Mumaw, and Rebecca Mumaw; nephews Daniel Capp, Zachary Johnson, Brent Hinson, Scott Mumaw, Nicholas Mumaw and Alex Crumly; her brother-in-law Eric Hinson and his wife, Kim; her sister-in-law Karen Hinson Mumaw and her husband, Robert; her best friend Anne Blackford; and a host of other relatives, friends, and beloved pets.

At Patience's request, there will be a Celebration of Life party held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Shriners Children's, a hospital that assists children and families with health care regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status.
