Obituary

Ms. Naomi Patricia Johnson, known to many as "Pat", was sent home to Heaven at 2:50 AM in Washington, DC, on Sunday February 9, 2020. She battled with pulmonary hypertension for a few years prior to her death.

Born on January 27, 1933 to John Slade Jr. and Aurelia Askew, she was the eldest of four children. She was born in Tabb, but raised in Newport News, where she matriculated through the education system. For high school, she attended Huntington where she was the head cheerleader for her cheerleading squad. It was during this time that she met and married her husband in 1949, Welford Othello Johnson, with whom she had two children. Soon thereafter, she had two more children before moving to Washington, DC. It was in Washington where she laid roots and had her final child.

In Washington, DC Naomi worked as a waitress before entering the Civil Service Commission. She worked in the federal government for over 20 years before her first retirement from the Department of Interstate Commerce in 1993. After her retirement, she began working at Hecht's (now known as Macy's), where she worked in the home section. She was also a member of Union Temple Baptist Church where she served on the repast committee, and helped prepare meals for families in celebration of their loved ones. In 2006, she moved to Chester, VA to be closer to her youngest grandchildren.

In Chester, Naomi worked as a school cafeteria attendant. She was very involved in the church and joined Second Baptist Church, where she served on the repast and events committee. In 2017 she retired for the last time and soon moved back to Newport News to spend her last years with her siblings, grandchildren and all of her extended family. It was in the last year of her life that she started attending Cary's Baptist Church where her family has attended for many years.

Naomi will be remembered for her excellent sewing and baking skills. She could sew anything from cheerleading uniforms to pajamas; something she did a lot for her children and grandchildren. She also had a love for cooking and baking. You would always catch her writing down a recipe. In addition, she loved the color red; you would never catch her without red hair, nails, or red lipstick. She is loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Naomi is survived by her children, Welford [Ricky (Linda)], Gale, Barbara Jean (Rasheka), and Tracy (Sylvester Jr.); siblings, Aurelia (Doll), and John (Sonny) and Alease; Nieces and Nephews, John, Kerry, Lisa, Jeff, Tyrone, Peggy, Scerene, Charmaine, Norman, Cecil, and Faynetta ; grandkids, Rochelle, Derrick, Eric, Asha, Darren, Moneka, Giovanni, Ashley, Ricky, Anthoney, Cassondra, Taylor, Sylvester, Jeremiah, Joshua; great grandkids Bianca, Taylor, Quentin, Jamone, Cole, Giovanni, Gianna, Serenity, Jasmine, Kenyon, and Amyiah. She was preceded in death by her son Steve, nephew Tommy Jr and her niece Linda.

May her soul rest in peace! May her family be blessed!

Visitation will be from 11 AM to 12 PM Monday, February 24, 2020 at Cary's Baptist Church. A funeral will follow at 12 PM.
