Obituary

Mildred Virginia Nettles

Mildred "Millie" V. Nettles gained her heavenly wings on Friday May 3, 2024. She was the sixth of nine children born to the late Moses Brown, Jr., and Gladys Slade Brown. Mildred was born and raised in Yorktown, VA. and educated at the Yorktown Training School. She was employed by Haywood Seafood in Poquoson, VA. Millie as she was affectionately known by her family and friends was a fun loving and free spirited soul. Millie was always the life of the party, and was sure to have everyone laughing or tell you what is on her mind. She was loved by all of her nieces and nephews, including the very youngest of the nieces and nephews, and was sure to give each one of them a nickname. When you met our mom, she was sure to call you either, Babycakes or Dollbaby, especially if she could not remember your name. She was vibrant up until her health began to fail. She will be missed by everyone that loved her and will always be remembered for the love she had for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Nettles; three sons, Dwight M. Brown, Charles L. Brown, and John W. Brown; six sisters, Nannie Pennie, Rachel Whitaker, Eva Dillard, Gladys Holland, Ophelia Talton, and Cecilia Whitby.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Sandra D. Brown, and Vicki M. Williams, both of Newport News, VA; three grandchildren, Damien Spratley, D'Andre Williams, Renee Williams all of Newport News, VA; four great grandchildren; one sister Laura Banks, of Newport News, VA; one brother Moses Brown, III and wife Leontine of Yorktown, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday May 13, 2024 11:00 AM at New Bethel Baptist Church, 3911 Big Bethel Road Yorktown, VA 23693. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to service. Interment will be at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Bulter Farm Road, Hampton, VA 23666 after the service.
