We are heartbroken to announce the death of our father, Michael Paul Newman, Sr., better known as "Big Mike", who unexpectedly passed away at the age of 65 on Monday, December 26, 2022.

He enjoyed being surrounded by the ones he loved, such as family and friends. He loved spending time near the beach, watching football, going to the race track and spending time with his youngest grandson and watching him grow. Before he passed, Mike was able to watch his youngest grandson ride his new bike for the first time, watch a race with his granddaughter, witness his favorite football team, Green Bay Packers, win on Christmas day and spend time with his friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Roy C. Newman; son, Michael P. Newman, Jr.; wife, Shirley Gail Haugen-Newman. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Renate E. Newman; son, Zachary W. Newman; step-son, James M. Hanchey; daughter, Rachel L. Hoyt; grandchildren, Jayden Newman, Kassandra Hoyt, Elijah Hoyt; brother; sisters; nieces; nephews; extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 PM Saturday, January 7, 2023 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News.
