Mary Adelaide Baker, age 86, passed away Christmas Day, December 25, 2024. She was born in Toledo, Ohio. Mary lived in Columbus, Ohio for a number of years until moving to Newport News with husband Donald Baker in 1971. They were members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mary was an Air Force Veteran having served our country as a Registered Nurse and continued to serve after her military service. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa chapter of Beta Sigmi Phi for over 60 years. Mary also spent time with the Greetings 2 U Club and the Cadillac LaSalle Club.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, David and his wife Jennifer of Mechanicsville and Greg and his wife Amy of Hayes; six grandchildren, Austin, Andrew, Auggie, Alex, Ashby, and Charlotte. She is also survived by her sisters, Chris Close her husband Mike and Roseann Santoro and her husband Frank and a brother, John Schmitt and his wife Angie.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Donald Baker, her parents, August and Rosalia Schmitt and a brother, Joseph Schmitt.
Mom loved spending time with her grandchildren and traveling.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, January 9, 2025 from 6:00-7:30 PM at W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA  23601. A Mass will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 at 1:30 PM in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with visitation 45 minutes before Mass. Burial will follow in the Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery at 3:00 PM.
