Obituary

Lucile Moseley Epes, 107, passed away July 17, 2022, at The Chesapeake retirement community. A lifelong resident of Newport News, she was born Feb. 23, 1915, and was the daughter of Adolphus Garland and Corinne Pearsall Moseley; sister of A.G. Moseley Jr. and Louise Robertson Aident; and devoted wife of Charles Chilton Epes Jr., all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Epes Foltz and her husband, Douglas, of Newport News; her son, Charles C. Epes III (Chuck) and his wife, Deborah, of Richmond; daughter-in-law Brenda B. Epes, wife of Lucile's eldest son, Cary Barclay Epes, who predeceased her; grandchildren Cary B. Epes Jr. (Tara), Karla Epes Fife (Steve), Steffanie Foltz Williams (Carl), Jeannette Epes (Erik), Charles C. Epes IV (Abigail), and Christopher M. Epes (Margaret); five great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Lucile was a graduate of Newport News High School and Farmville State Teachers College, now Longwood University (class of 1937). Her teaching career began in Hampton at John M. Willis Elementary School, continued in Newport News at Hidenwood Elementary, and concluded at Hilton Elementary, where she retired after teaching first grade for 18 years. She was a master teacher loved by students, parents, peers, and administrators. In addition to her teaching career, Lucile was active in her community. During World War II, she served as a Gray Lady for the Red Cross at the Patrick Henry Embarkation Center. She was a former member of the Newport News Junior and Senior Women's Clubs, member and past president of the James River Garden Club, a volunteer teacher for the Peninsula Literacy Council, a former board member of the Catholic Home Bureau Adoption Agency, and a board member of The Greenlawn (Cemetery) Foundation. When blinded by macular degeneration late in life, she founded and led the first Peninsula Eye Watch, a support group for the visually impaired. She was also a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Hilton Village and of her church circle.

Lucile married her beloved Charlie Boy in 1938 and enjoyed 49 years of marriage, raising three children and relishing life on the James River before his death in 1987. She loved her family, entertaining, gardening, Bloody Mary's, seafood, walking, a good joke, Democrats, and the company of longtime friends and neighbors. The last few years of her life were difficult, as she could neither see nor hear, suffered dementia, and was bedridden. Yet always the teacher, she maintained a generous, positive spirit until the very end of her life, never complaining. She was very much loved.

The Epes family would like to thank the staff at The Chesapeake for their kind and caring support of Lucile during her later years. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery is private. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 10246 Warwick Boulevard, on August 20 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Conexusvision.org (formerly Prevent Blindness Virginia), First United Methodist Church, or a favorite charity.
