Lois Ellen Hartzler Mericle died peacefully in her home in Newport News, surrounded by the love and care of her family on June 1, 2021.

She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Pastor Carl Mericle of Providence Mennonite Church; her three children, C. Jason Mericle (Gerry), David L. Mericle (Hillary), and Karen Mericle Doffing (Nicholas); four of her five brothers; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a strong independent woman who loved to take trips to the beach and go on nature hikes talking about the plants and animals she would encounter. She especially enjoyed teaching and being with children, restoring antique books and furniture and drinking coffee at book stores making friends with those around her.

A memorial service will be held on July 17, 2021 at 1 PM at Providence Mennonite Church.
