Juanita Elizabeth Slack, 93 years old, passed away on January 27, 2025. Juanita was born to Attie and August Ludwig on October 13, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland.

After graduating from Towson State Teachers College she started her career as an elementary school teacher. While living in Baltimore she met John (Jack) Slack. They married on November 22, 1952. They raised their family there until they moved to Newport News, VA in 1971.

Juanita continued her teaching career in Newport News Public Schools. Along with her husband, she retired in 1986. During their retirement they traveled extensively around the world, with their close friends who also relocated from Baltimore to Newport News. She also volunteered at the Virginia Living Museum for 20 years.

She sang in church choirs and then at The Chesapeake Retirement Community for many years. Many enjoyed her lovely voice.

Juanita is predeceased by her husband John (Jack), and her sister Margaret Spitzhoff. She is survived by son Gary and wife Gretchen; son Donald and wife Grace; son Phillip and wife Becky; and daughter Sandra Lackie; grandchildren, Christopher Lackie (Melissa), and Daria Slack (Francesca). She is also survived by her step-granddaughters, Monica Cromwell (Eddie) and Andrea Robertson (Chris); great-grandson Henry Asher Lackie; and step-great grandsons, Andew Davis, and Joseph, Alek, and Nathan Robertson.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Chesapeake's Healthcare Unit for their care of Juanita in her final days.

Services entrusted to W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private. Inurnment will be at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
