Joyce Whitlow Spiers passed away at the age of 94 on March 1, 2025. She is the daughter of the late James Byron and Mary Moore Whitlow, born December 20, 1930. As a teenager her family moved to Richmond, VA where she graduated from John Marshall High School.  She gave her life to Christ as a member of Gordon Avenue Christian Church. After graduation, she married and moved to the Hampton Roads area serving as a loving homemaker. She volunteered at her children's elementary school and participated in PTA.  She was very active in her community and served as a pollster. She joined Hilton Baptist Church where she attended worship services, Sunday school, and was active in the Women's Missionary Program. Joyce participated in the Virginia Tech Home Demonstration Club. Many of her hobbies included sewing, cooking, crafting, and decorating. She enjoyed making beautiful articles of clothing for family and friends.

Joyce, also known as Nana, was a lover of people. She never met a stranger and charmed everyone she met. Her sense of humor and laughter always made for fun when she was around. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is predeceased by her brother, James Calvin Whitlow. Joyce is survived by her loving husband Robert Beverly Spiers, Jr.; three sons, Mark (Vicky), Neil (Deborah), Dean (Laura). She has 9 grandchildren, Jason, Brett (Kelly), Seth (Nicole), Krista (Greg) Iannuzzi, Laurie (Josh) Starkey, Lisa (Wes) Hughes, Aaron (Nikki), Jessica (Jake) Broaddus, and Robert. She has 16 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Friday, March 7, 2025 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA. Burial will be private.
