John Edward "Eddie" Israel, 88, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021. Born in Candler, North Carolina, he had been a Peninsula resident for 70 years. Eddie was a member of Denbigh Baptist Church for 65 years, where he taught Sunday School. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and retired in 1995 as a designer with Newport News Shipbuilding. Eddie was an avid Redskins fan, and was a member of the Newport News Park RC Club.

Survivors include his wife, Wandalee Israel, of Newport News; a sister-in-law, Marie Israel, of Asheville, North Carolina; a nephew, Fred Israel, of Asheville, North Carolina; and a niece, Kaye Poole, of Georgia. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Emmalee Israel Skelly; his parents, Jesse and Emma Skelly Israel of Asheville, North Carolina; and two brothers, Frank Israel and James Israel.

Visitation will be from 9 AM to 10 AM Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at Denbigh Baptist Church, with a funeral service immediately following with Rev. Lindsay Poteat and Rev. Rick Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Denbigh Baptist Church Memorial Fund or to the Peninsula Rescue Mission.
