Obituary

Jimmy Wilbur Usry, 87, passed away on January 26, 2023, after a long, hard battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Schley County, Georgia, he had been a Virginia resident for over 60 years. He graduated from Americus High School in Americus, Georgia in 1954 where he was an exceptional athlete, playing basketball, baseball, and, his favorite, football as a running back superstar. His athletic prowess made him a hometown hero. He remained extremely close to his high school class, attending annual reunions up until 2019 when he attended the 65 th Americus High School reunion. After high school he attended Georgia Tech, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Jim spent his entire career working for NASA at Langley Air Force Base except for two years spent at Houston, Texas with the Space Task Group. Jim worked on various projects designed to improve aircraft safety while at NASA, retiring in 1993 after 35 years of dedicated civil service. Upon retirement Jim and his wife, Judy, enjoyed traveling for a number of years, seeing much of our beautiful country.  He also enjoyed golf, fishing, but mostly trading stocks in the market. Jim spent hours upon hours studying and learning how to be successful with his investments, and was quite good at it. Jim was an engineer through and through, dedicated to expanding his mind and his knowledge.

Jim is survived by his wife, Judy, of 61 years; his daughters, Kim and Lynn and their husbands Scott Pinto and Curtis Jimenez respectively. His grandchildren include Kim's children, Mackenzie Reed (husband Jon), Jordan Schaller, Alex Pinto, and Skye Pinto; and Lynn's son, Josh. He is also survived by four great grandchildren (Mackenzie & Jon's) Madison, Mallory, Maxwell ,and Makenna. He is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Reed (husband Rainy) and Joann Coker; and numerous nieces and nephews, idolized by many. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joshua and Alma Usry; brothers, Franklin, Willie, Rodolph, Millard, Britt, Douglas; a sister Barbara Tatum; and by his daughter Ruth Usry.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Medi-Home Health and Hospice as well as the caring staff at The Chesapeake for their loving attention and guidance during this difficult time.
