Obituary

Jeffrey Lee Spielberger, 68, of Newport News, passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2022. Born with physical disabilities, Jeffrey grew and lived to defy them every day and at every challenge, defining himself through perseverance, altruism, patriotism, and his undying love for and belief in all humankind.

Jeffrey was a selfless a soul as there ever was. He spent countless hours as a volunteer and mentor to those with similar disabilities, and influenced thousands worldwide with his positive disposition and successes. His desire to improve the lives of those less fortunate was manifest in his countless charitable contributions in time and resources.

Jeffrey attended the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, VA, graduating class Valedictorian in 1975, and carried his love of academics and athletics to Gallaudet University in Washington, D. C. At Gallaudet, not only was Jeffrey once again his graduating class' Valedictorian, but he was a track coach for the U.S. Deaf Olympic Track Team and an integral part of the G.U. Football coaching staff. His coaching and leadership abilities led to multiple championships for the school softball team, and his dedication to the university lasted over 25 years, culminating in his induction into the Gallaudet University Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his siblings: Jon, Jill, Joel and Jason; his nieces and nephew Krista, Madison, Tyler and Isabel; great niece Madeline and great nephew Zoran.
