Jean Daughtrey
Newton
Feb 9, 1930 — Jan 5, 2021
Jean Daughtrey Newton, born February 9, 1930 of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on January 5, 2021. A native of Holland/Suffolk, VA, Jean graduated from Holland High School and attended Chowan College in NC. She worked at Newport News Shipbuilding in the Machinery Design Dept. from the early 50s until 1966. In 1958, she married the late Thomas T. Newton [Dick]. In 1966, when her only son, William T. Newton [Bill] was born, she became a homemaker until her death.
Jean had a lifetime a love for family, friends and her club members. She always wanted to hear the latest on what was happening in their lives and to share what was happening in hers. She was a caregiver, baby sitter, friendly neighbor, family matriarch, conversationalist ,and a people person. Jean loved cooking. It didn't matter if you were the house painter, auto mechanic, club member, friend, x-con or family. If you came between breakfast and dinner, you would receive a home cooked meal and a goodie bag to go. She was blessed to have maintained her physical and mental capacity throughout her life with only a few hiccups along the way. She was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church and in her mid life years assisted in the church kitchen. Jean loved her fellow Beta Sigma Phi sisters and was a member for over 60 years. Her husband's love for antique autos provided the opportunity for the family to travel to find rare antique car parts. Jean enjoyed the many people she met in 48+ years as a member of the Colonial Virginia Model A Ford Club.
This past year Jean was fortunate to spend many of her days attending Williamsburg Landing Adult Day Center where she engaged in numerous enjoyable activities. She was grateful for the caring staff and the care they gave her. Jean and her son would like to encourage people to look into this program as an excellent and reasonable alternative to assisted living.
Jean's son, Bill, was the joy of her life and loved him dearly. He was always there for her up until her death making sure she was receiving all that she needed. She wanted everyone to know he was a wonderful son giving up so much in his life to take care of her.
Jean was the daughter of the late, Gladys Badger Daughtrey and William Clifton Daughtrey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Taylor Newton. She is survived by her son, William T. Newton (Bill) of Newport News, brother, Charles Henry Daughtrey of Holland, VA and his wife, Carolyn Daughtrey, sister, Rebecca (Becky) Smith, and her husband, Jerry Smith of Harbinger, North Carolina. Jean was also preceded in death by a half-sister, Sarah Daughtrey Chalker, and half-brothers, Thomas Daughtrey, Darien Daughtrey, and James Jacob Daughtrey.
Funeral arrangements are by W. J.Smith & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 3 PM at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Blvd. Newport News, VA 23606.
