Jacqueline (Jackie) Coates Byrum, 93, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024. She was a native of Newport News and longtime Peninsula resident. She was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church.

Jackie was born on November 25, 1930 to Rufus and Elizabeth Coates in Newport News, Virginia and graduated from Newport News High School. Jackie worked for several businesses as a secretary. She worked the majority of career at Ivy Memorial Baptist Church at the Newport News location and later in Hampton when the church relocated.

Jackie was predeceased by her husband Carol Melvin Byrum in 2010 after 60 years of marriage. She is survived by her son, David Carol Byrum and his wife Shirley, of Wimberley, TX; two granddaughters, Allison Byrum of Brooklyn, NY and Amy Hager and her husband Aaron and two great grandsons, Andrew and Aiden all of China Spring,TX. She is also survived by her sister Virginia (Ginny) Heath of Newport News, VA and many other friends and family.

The family will receive friends on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 3-4 PM at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 1:00 PM in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
