Obituary

Janice Marie Hinson, 84, of Newport News, Virginia passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 19, 2026.  Upon taking her last breath here on earth, she opened her eyes and stood face to face with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and reunited with her beloved husband, Nelson.   She was born on August 9, 1941 in Sampson County, NC – the second child to James (Tom) and Lottie Wise.

She grew up working on the farm, alongside her family, where she learned the value of hard work.  It was also at this time that she learned and perfected the art of being a true Southern Cook by preparing the family meals while her parents worked in the field.   Anyone who knew her and was fortunate to eat at her table will testify she was one of the best cooks and always prepared enough for one more. It gave her so much joy to cook for her family, especially when she was able to share that with them, passing down all of her secret ingredients and expert advice for a perfect meal!

Janice graduated from Hobbton High School in 1959.  During her senior year, she met and fell in love with her soulmate, Nelson Hinson.  They were married in April of 1961. Nelson was her best friend, and they exemplified what a Godly marriage should look like.  Shortly thereafter, they moved to Newport News, where she resided until her death.  But North Carolina was always home where she loved to visit and spend time with her family.

Janice came to work with Nelson at the family's concrete business in 1978, learning how to be the bookkeeper on her own with a trusted friend to guide her. She served Denbigh Construction as the Secretary/Treasurer for 38 years until her retirement in 2016, proudly helping the company to be the business that is today.

At the time of her death, she was a member of Menchville Baptist Church and truly enjoyed being a part of the congregation.  Early in their marriage, Janice converted from Catholicism to Baptist while attending Warwick Baptist Church. She and Nelson would host weekly Bible study meetings for the youth in their home. This became a haven for those who needed the extra love and attention she could provide.   Many of them today will say how Janice and Nelson's God given hospitality and love for teaching the Bible greatly impacted their lives.  She was also a former member of First Baptist Church of Newport News. After retirement, she and Nelson became staunch supporters of the Christopher Newport Women's Basketball team and formed many meaningful relationships with players, coaches, and family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Hinson, her parents, her brothers, Carroll and Tony and sister Gloria.

She is survived by her son Ricky Hinson and wife Nancy; daughter Andrea Beck and husband Joey, and daughter Nicki Hinson; her brother Bill Wise; her sisters Wilma Hendrikson and Mary Lynn Godwin and her husband, Jim. Also surviving are her grandchildren Hope, Amber (Doug) and Rebecca Hinson, Jayce (Kelly) and Caleb Beck; and Alexis, Brady, Cody and Dusty Armstrong and seven great grandchildren, Chloe, Cassie, Trip, Berlyn, Maddie, Oakley, and Hallie.  In addition, she is survived by four sisters in law and host of extended family members and friends who became family.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made in support of the Women's Basketball program at Christopher Newport University. Gifts may be made online at  i.cnu.edu/wbb-call or by check made payable to "CNUEF" and mailed to the CNU Office of Advancement, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Newport News, VA 23606 or Thrive Peninsula; 12749 Nettles Dr, Newport News, VA 23606.
