Janee Lee
Edwards
d. Jul 28, 2025
Newport News
Janee Edwards passed away on July 28, 2025, after a brief period of home Hospice. She grew up in Arnold, Maryland and went on to graduate from the University of Maryland with a BA in French and Spanish in 1966. After college, she went to work in Anne Arundel County in the social service department, where she was involved with adoptions and other social issues. During a summer visit to her sister Joan, in Newport News, she met her husband-to-be through a mutual friend of her sister's, over a shipyard lunch break, at the Biffan Restaurant. After that meeting and many trips and letters to each other they married on October 9th, 1967. They later had a son, Chris. She went to work for Newport News Social Services and was very involved with her clients. One Christmas, she bought a Christmas Tree and some canned goods for a client. On another occasion, a little old lady that loved her so, made a soup tureen with matching cups in a ceramic workshop and gave those to Janee. Any family or friends that came to Janee's house over the years would have seen that soup tureen set on top of her kitchen refrigerator. She was loved and she was dedicated to her work. She later went to work at Riverside Hospital Mental Health, and she furthered her education at VCU while she was there. She received an MSW in 1983 and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 1986. She was preceded by her father John Snuggs, her Mother Ethel Snuggs, two sisters Joan McGuire and Dorothy Mcullah, and a brother John Snuggs. She leaves behind her husband Willard, son Chris, and daughter-in-law Tracey, many nieces and nephews, and her very best friends, Debbie and Bernie Mayer, and friend Laura McQueen.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM, Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
