Jane Lynn
Pettit Riggs
d. Nov 21, 2023
Newport News
Jane Lynn Pettit Riggs, 72, of Newport News, VA passed away and was received into the Kingdom of Heaven on November 21, 2023 at Riverside Hospital, surrounded by her family, whom loved her so very much. She was born December 4, 1950 in Asheville, NC. She graduated from Warwick High School in 1968. She later graduated in 1971 as a Registered Nurse (RN) from Riverside School of Professional Nursing.
Jane spent nearly 30 years in service as a Hemodialysis RN working throughout the Peninsula but spent the majority of her career at The Hope Dialysis Center in Hampton and she last worked at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News.
She was an active member of Parkview United Methodist Church in Newport News for more than 50 years. She loved music and she loved singing as a member of her church's choir, where she sang alto. She was preparing to sing in this year's upcoming annual Christmas Cantata, which was a special service that she looked forward to singing in every year.
Jane loved Jesus, her husband Casey of 49 years, her four children, Martha, Elizabeth, Robert, and Paul, her six grandchildren, Madeline, Anna, Hunter, Emma, Lillian, and Eva, her many dogs and cats over the years, and UNC Tarheels Basketball. She was always very involved in the daily lives of her children and grandchildren. She loved attending her grandchildren's many dance recitals, ballets, chorus concerts, art exhibitions, and school and sporting events. Spending time with her family was one of her greatest joys.
Jane will be remembered for showing others what it means to shine Christ's love into this world. She was a woman of deep and steadfast faith and she was compassionate, kind, generous, forgiving and funny. She graciously met people where they are and gave them space to come as they are. When her children were young, her home was always open to their friends and she was a second mom to many. Her home was full of love, laughter, family, and of course, UNC Basketball. Go Heels! She modeled what it looks like to show grace and mercy but also how to be strong and fight, as well as how to walk in faith, even when that is a nearly impossible task. She taught her children the true meaning of family and what it means to create "home".
Most importantly, she felt her crowning achievement in motherhood was helping each of her four beloved children to know and accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. This gave her joy and peace in knowing that one day they'll all be reunited again in Heaven.
Preceding her in rest are her parents, Lecil and Martha Pettit. Surviving members of her family include her loving husband of 49 years, Cassin George "Casey" Riggs; daughter, Martha Sznoluch and her husband Jim, and their three children, Madeline, Hunter, and Emma; daughter, Elizabeth "Liz" Ferguson and her husband, Alex; son, Robert Riggs and his wife Samantha, and their daughter Anna; son, Paul Riggs and his wife Whitney, and their daughters, Lillian and Eva. Also, surviving are her brother, Marshall Pettit and his wife, Kim; aunt, Margaret "Peg" Pettit; sister-in-law, Paula Riggs; sister-in-law, Peggy Sexton and her husband, Alan; brother-in-law, Danny Riggs; and her nephews, Adrian Riggs, Christopher Riggs, Adam Sexton, and Eric Sexton.
The family will receive friends for a visitation and viewing on Tuesday November 28, 2023 from 12:30-1:30 pm, followed immediately by Jane's Celebration of Life Service, at 1:30 pm at Parkview United Methodist Church, 912 Briarfield Rd Newport News, VA 23605. Arrangements are under the care of W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville, Rd. Newport News, VA 23601.
