Hubert "Short" Jasper Rhodes, 88, of Smithfield, Virginia, departed this earth Friday, November 11, 2022 surrounded by his wife and children at home.

Hubert was born on December 29, 1933 in Nash County, NC to Ed and Emma Rhodes. He was one of 13 children. Hubert spent his life working on the family farm in North Carolina and then Newport News Shipbuilding for 30 years after moving to Virginia in 1957. He and his wife, JoAnn, were married December 30, 1957. He was a country boy through and through and loved fishing, gardening, Southern cooking, and Coca-Cola.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his 6 sisters and 6 brothers.

Hubert is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, JoAnn; their four children, Diane (Gary) Rosenthal of Smithfield, VA, Hubert (Debbie) Rhodes, Jr. of White Stone, VA, Edward (Tanya) Rhodes of Jacksonville, FL, Steven Rhodes of Smithfield, VA; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The funeral will be a private ceremony and graveside service with only close family members present. The family will receive visitors at the home of Diane and Gary Rosenthal in Smithfield on the evening of Tuesday, November 15, 2022 from 5 to 7 PM.
