Persson
d. Jul 21, 2022
NEWPORT NEWS
Gert Ingvar Persson, 90, of Newport News passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 21, 2022. He was born in Lund, Sweden, on November 26, 1931. Gert valued his Scandinavian upbringing and was very close to his maternal grandparents. An avid athlete and fan, Gert played 'football' growing up and took up tennis and golf later in life. After graduating from high school in Lund, Gert enrolled in Technical College and successfully completed his term there. In the early 1970's, Gert was hired by Gambro, Inc., a Swedish medical company, which manufactured kidney dialysis equipment. Gert moved to Newport News, VA in 1974 to open Gambro's first manufacturing office in the United States and ultimately became Gambro's Production Manager. Over the years, Gert was selected to open additional Gambro facilities in Portugal, Italy, Germany, Japan, and the former Czech Republic. Throughout his career, Gert brought his Swedish work ethic and uncompromising excellence to everything he did! He retired in 1996. Gert met and married his devoted and loving wife, Joyce, in 1991. They have enjoyed a rich and rewarding life together; traveling all over the world, cooking for and entertaining many friends, sharing numerous Swedish traditions, especially Midsummers, and absorbing the daily sunset views from their 10th floor home on the James River. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Williamsburg Golf Club. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Gert was predeceased by his parents, Olof T. and Gerda T. Persson; his sisters, Ingrid and Anna Brita and his brother, Stig. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Joyce; a son, Anders; his niece, Anna; his nephews, Ulf and Lars; his sisters-in-law, Brenda (Roger) and Louise, and many, many friends. The family will receive friends at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home from 1-2:00 PM on Thursday, July 28, 2022, followed by a funeral service at the funeral home at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family would like to thank Care Advantage and Amedisys Hospice for their nursing care. Expressions of sympathy are welcomed and can be made to the charity of one's choosing. Please leave online condolences at www.wjsmithandson.com.
