Obituary

Floyd E. Mears, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Floyd was born in Newport News, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his father, Floyd E. Mears, Sr., mother, Grace H. Mears, brother Colbert E. Mears (Barbara), and son, Gregory B. Mears (Jana).

After graduating from Warwick High School, he went to work for  the C & O Railroad, first as a Brakeman, a Conductor, then Yardmaster, where he worked for 44 years until he retired.  He was known for his curious nature.  He loved taking things apart, trying to figure out how they worked, then putting them back together again.  By doing so, he became a jack of all trades and could fix almost anything.

He loved his wife and his family immensely, and looked forward to visits from his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was a quiet person.  He did not voice his opinion often, but when he spoke, you listened, because you knew what he had to say was important.  His quiet faith strengthened over the years and was evident in both his words and his deeds.  He was one of the most honest and kind people you could meet.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia, of 67 years; his children, Cathy Leach (Joe), David Mears, Jimmy Mears (Wendy), Debbie Fenton (Mike); his three grandchildren, Matthew Fenton (Leslie), J.R. Mears (Holly), Kylie Leach and his two great-grandchildren, Harper Fenton and Emily Fenton.

A graveside service will be held at Peninsula Memorial Park on Monday, June 17, 2024 at 3:00 PM for  the immediate family.
