Etta Susan
"Sue" Caudell Bartgis
d. Jan 4, 2022
Hampton
Etta Susan "Sue" Caudell Bartgis, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 4th. Sue was born in Hinton, West Virginia to William H. Caudell and Virginia Helen Fitzpatrick Caudell. She graduated from Hinton High School in 1959. She married her high school sweetheart, Kay Richard Bartgis, who preceded her in death in 2015 after 57 years of marriage. They had three children: Michael (Linda), Jeffrey (Rene), and David (Sandy). Kay and Sue settled in Hampton, Virginia where, in addition to being a wife and mother, she retired from Sears Roebuck after 27 years. Always trying to better herself, she relentlessly pursued her education eventually earning her degree in Accounting from Christopher Newport College, the first in her family. Sue was an avid reader and collected rare and depression-era glass and jewelry. Even when limited by health issues, Sue never surrendered her independence insisting on her own errands, shopping, and calling Bingo for the senior residence at the Somerset Community. Above all, Sue loved her family. She was always proud of her sons and their families. Sue loved to be surrounded by her family and made her home a warm gathering place for holidays and special occasions. Sue was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Anna L. Proffit and brother, Donald W. Caudell. In addition to her sons, she leaves behind her brother, Richard Caudell, sister Dorothy Smith; 5 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. There will be a private burial and celebration of Sue's life in West Virginia at a later date. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Newport News.
