In Loving Memory of Elbert "Rudy" Davis
Elbert "Rudy" Davis, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2023. His departure leaves a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. Rudy was a remarkable man who lived a life of devotion to his family, his work, and his faith.
Born on December 19, 1947 in Enfield, NC, Rudy was the son of Jordan and Inell Davis. He was raised with strong values and a deep sense of responsibility as the oldest of 5 children. Rudy attended Virginia Beach public schools where he excelled as a sports star up through high school playing basketball, football, and running track when the family moved there in 1950. After completing his education, Rudy joined the US Army and served time in Vietnam. When he returned and had fulfilled his obligations to the Army he embarked on a fulfilling career in the railroad industry, dedicating over four decades of service to the field. He happily retired from Norfolk Southern Railway in 2008 and embarked on yet another journey as a retired entrepreneur. He started his own lawn care company, B. A. M. M., and dedicated his now free days to cutting grass and planting flowers, something he has always taken pride in and enjoyed. He approached his work with diligence and commitment, earning the respect of his colleagues at the railroad and turning lawn care customers into lifelong friends.
Rudy found great joy in his marriage to his beloved wife, Barbara Davis. Together, they shared 42 wonderful years of love, laughter, and unwavering support. Their bond was a testament to the power of true partnership and the strength that can be found in a shared journey. Through the ups and downs of life, Rudy and Barbara remained steadfast in their love and were a shining example of a lasting and fulfilling union.
As a father, Rudy was devoted to his three children, Rob, Ashley and Maya. He cherished the role of a parent and took pride in guiding and nurturing his children through life's challenges. The loss of Maya in 2007 was a heartbreaking blow to the family, but Rudy's love and strength helped them navigate the difficult times and find solace in cherished memories. Maya's spirit will forever live on in their hearts, a reminder of the fragility and preciousness of life.
Beyond his professional and familial pursuits, Rudy was a man of deep faith. His relationship with the Lord was the guiding force in his life, shaping his character and influencing his interactions with others. Rudy's unwavering commitment to his faith was evident in the way he treated his family and friends—with kindness, compassion, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in their lives. He was a source of support and encouragement to all who knew him, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
In his free time, Rudy enjoyed tinkering with old cars, spending time outdoors, and being an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Many trips were made to the Steel City to watch his favorite team. He possessed a love for nature and found solace in its beauty. Rudy's warm smile, hearty laugh, and infectious zest for life were a testament to his vibrant spirit and his ability to find joy in even the simplest of pleasures.
Elbert "Rudy" Davis was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Maya Danielle, and his youngest sister, Stephanie, but he leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering faith and his memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife, Barbara; his children, Rob Milteer and Ashley Toney (Terrell); 3 sisters, LaVonda, Theresa, and Phyllis; 4 grandchildren, Brendan, Cameron, Ashton, and Keaton; an extensive extended family; and a host of friends and acquaintances who were fortunate enough to have known him. As we bid farewell to Rudy, let us take solace in knowing that he has been called home to be with his beloved daughter Maya, and that his spirit will continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
A memorial service to celebrate Rudy's life will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, 11:00 AM at Liberty Live Church, 1021 Big Bethel Road in Hampton, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to LibertyLive.Church as Rudy was passionate about working with the ministries of the church.
May his soul find eternal rest, and may we all find comfort in the memories we shared with Elbert "Rudy" Davis.
