Dorothy Ann
Farthing Mills
d. Sep 22, 2025
Dorothy Ann Farthing Mills, 97 years old, passed away on September 22, 2025, in Hampton, Virginia. Dorothy (Dot) was born on October 24, 1927, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to Maria (Dove) and George Farthing. She grew up on the family farm and shared many fond memories about life on their farm.
Dorothy graduated from Gretna High School and attended James Madison University at a time when a much smaller percentage of women attended college. She would later graduate from Old Dominion University. In 1949, she married Jackson Mills, and they soon moved to Hampton, Virginia, where she became a "computer" at NASA in the very early stages of the space program. A lifelong resident of Virginia, she lived in Hampton, Newport News, Gloucester County, and York County and was a member of Crooks Memorial United Methodist Church.
Dorothy and Jack raised two children, Keith and Kay. She went on to become a kindergarten/first grade teacher for many years, including at Trinity Lutheran in Newport News, Denbigh Presbyterian in Newport News, where she was also the director, and in the York County School system where she retired. Dorothy was a fantastic daughter, wife, mother, gramee, and great gramee, and was a person of great faith with a kind word and heart for everyone. She was a volunteer to Yorktown Days and feeding the needy, and a great supporter of veterans.
Dorothy is survived by son Keith Mills (Holly), daughter Kay Rowe (Jimmy), brother George Farthing (Clara), granddaughters Jenna Rowe and Brooke Gainey (Scott), great granddaughter Madison, great grandson Owen, and cousins, nieces and nephews.
