Donna Thompson Smith went home to be with her Heavenly Father on July 23, 2025.  She was 94 years old.

Donna was born in Bluefield, West Virginia in 1930 to Charmie and Bill Thompson. She attended nursing school at Pulaski Hospital, in Pulaski, Virginia where she met her future husband.  Donna was a lifelong resident of Newport News and retired from Siemens, Newport News where was was employed as the facility Registered Nurse.  She also previously worked at Riverside Hospital.  In earlier years she was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Newport News where she served as the church Historian and later as a Sunday School teacher for many years.

Donna was preceded in death by her loving husband, William (Bill) Smith, to whom she was married for 64 years.  Donna leaves behind her three children, Renee Smith Jeffers, Debra Smith Doty and Whit (Amy) Smith; four grandchildren, Tyler (Alyssa) Smith, Shelby (Travis) Steele, Andrew (Allie) Doty and Nathan (Athena) Doty; and her three great-grandchildren, Emery and Paisley Steele, and Vivienne Doty.  She also leaves behind her son-in-law, Tom Doty.

Donna was a beloved wife, a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and a friend to many.  Her faith in Jesus Christ shaped her life and the life of her family and friends.  Donna loved to cook for her family and neighbors, she loved traveling, and she loved all animals especially her dogs, cats and her "pet" squirrels who were always named "Baby".

Friends and family will gather for a graveside service on Tuesday, July 29th at 11am at Peninsula Memorial Park, 12750 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Virginia.  The service will be officiated by Reverend Thomas Everett.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests your consideration of donations to Donna's favorite charities - The Salvation Army (www.virginiasalvationarmy.org) or to a local animal rescue group or shelter.
