Obituary

Donna Katrie Adams was born November 27, 1957 to the late Cora Christine Watson and Everett Malcolm Barnett in Washington, DC. She graduated from Peekskill High School in Peekskill, NY. In 1977, as a young adult, she attended Redemption Church of Christ of the Apostolic Faith in Troy, NY. In that space, she shaped her spiritual presence and quickly became a role model to the youth in and around her community.

In 1991, she relocated to Virginia with her only child, Rebecca. With no community or network, she relied on her resiliency and spirit to find her chosen family and influenced every life she touched along the way. In 1995, she became a member of Lighthouse Assembly of God in Norfolk, where she served as the Children's Minister for more than 20 years. She became a second mother, guide, and safe place for many young people seeking solace in her community. Donna was known for her giving hands and open heart, and always made time to pray with and for anyone in their time of need. She will always be remembered in her community as a faithful and reliable woman of God.

In 2019, Donna's natural compassion and grit led her to complete her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Norfolk State University with a 4.0 GPA. Simultaneously, she worked full time, battled breast cancer, and even pursued swimming lessons. She went on to pursue a career in education after graduation, teaching preschool while maintaining her role as children's minister. Donna cherished her life and spread kindness everywhere she went. Even through sickness, she encouraged others, praying and sharing the word of God.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Adams; four sisters, Roxie Kight, Christine Simpson, Barbara Barnett, and Naomi Ingram-Barbieri (Leonard); and a host of other relatives, chosen family, and friends. Although she was a mother to one, many considered Donna to be their mother, for her warm nurturing presence and unconditional support.

The family will receive friends  at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, June 8, 2023 from 4-5:30 PM followed by a funeral service at 5:30 PM.
