Clyde C.
Nance
d. Feb 4, 2019
Clyde C. Nance went on to his heavenly reward on February 4, 2019 at his home in Newport News, surrounded by the friends and family he loved so much. Mr. Nance spent his career building, from constructing homes in Winston-Salem, NC to his award winning work for Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock with the Clyde Nance Construction Company, to the hand made furniture he lovingly crafted for friends and family.
Born at home in Walkertown, NC on May 15, 1946 to Grady Elmer Nance, Sr. and Annie Nance; it was in that humble home that Clyde would begin a journey that would take him from a sharecropper's cabin to the heights of professional success. In 1963 Clyde married Mary (Judy) Louise Goins and they would remain together as partners in business and life for 55 years. Known to everyone as Judy, she was the center of Clyde's world and his constant companion following his retirement in 2000. Clyde and Judy shared everything, especially their unflinching faith.
The last two decades of Clyde's life were also dedicated to his unflinching love and trust in Jesus Christ. Clyde helped build church facilities in South Carolina. He shared his gifts with those who had a hard time helping themselves and did so with humility and grace. In 2002 Clyde shared those gifts with a community in rural Honduras, helping them build a dental clinic and teaching the local men skills that they could use to make a living for their families.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Chad Nance; his daughter Cindy Nance Richardson and her husband Patrick; his grandchildren, Elijah Nance, Alexander Nance, Leeann Richardson, and Maryann Richardson, as well as Clyde's "adopted" grandchildren Lindsay Shelton and her daughter Olivia. Clyde also said farewell to his beloved dog J.J. Mr. Nance's surviving siblings are Barbara Karfit, Mary Stone, Betty Prince, Robert Nance, Pamela Smithdeal, and Grady Elmer Nance, Jr., as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Clyde is survived by his church family at Liberty Baptist Church.
