Charlie passed away on April 24, 2025, a day before his 64th birthday, after a long illness.  Born to Thomas S. Barker, Jr. and Sabra B. Barker, in El Paso, Texas, Charlie and his two older brothers spent most of their youth as typical military children – always on the move, sometimes moving across country or overseas.  Notable stops included Texas, Germany, Arizona, Florida, and Iran.

After high school, Charlie settled permanently in the Hampton/Newport News area, working in the construction business.  A fine craftsman in all the construction trades, he was generous in sharing his expertise and time with family and friends.  He was also an avid birdwatcher, a passionate gardener, and a devoted pet owner.

Charlie left us far too early.  He was preceded in death by his parents.  Left to mourn his loss and carry on his memory are his stepmother, Zelina; his brothers, Albert (Mary) and Bill (Leigh); his nephews, Daniel (Lauren), Andrew (Becca), Christopher (Simona), and his niece Abigail (Drax); six great nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, friends, and acquaintances.  The unbounding love and support of his family and friends during his final years gave him solace.

A memorial service for Charlie will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at W. J. Smith and Son Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in his memory to a charity of one of Charlie's passions – birds, gardens, or pets or of your choice.
