Charles "Charlie"
Herbert Lane, Sr.
d. Jan 26, 2024
Charles "Charlie" Herbert Lane, Sr., age 80, of Newport News VA, entered into the hands of God peacefully Friday, January 26th, 2024 with his wife and family by his side.
Charlie, the youngest of five children, was born on July 8, 1943 to Horace Vance Lane and Irma (Florence) Lane of Woodland, North Carolina. In Charlie's earlier years he served as a firefighter and paramedic, before starting Lane's Upholstery where he would spend the rest of his career. Following retirement, Charlie spent most of time on his farm doing what he loved, bailing hay, working on his tractors, and enjoying the beauty of the mountains.
Charlie loved bluegrass music, which lead to many leisurely music sessions with close friends, church music nights, and even starting a band called Charlie Lane and the Dusty Roads. His talent for instruments and his angelic baritone voice is the source of many of his families and friends fond memories.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Horace Vance and Irma (Florence) Lane; his brothers, Thomas Vance Lane, Millard Archie Lane, Lister Ray Lane; his nephews; and his favorite dog, Rusty.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Anne Lane; his five children and their spouses, Charles Herbert Lane Jr. (Laurie), David Lewis Lane (Kim), Stephanie Lynn Hopkins (Mel), Kimberly Louise Harlow (Billy), Roxanne Marie Lane; as well as his brother Horace H. Lane; sister-in-law Linda Lane; and his nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren and their families, Katherine M. Lane, Chason H. Lane, Lon Hopkins, Brad Hopkins, Scott Hopkins, James Harlow, Benjamin Harlow, Krista Hopkins, Daniel Harlow, Collin Hopkins, Taylor Deckard and Carrington Jones.
Charlie was a God-fearing man who had a heart of gold and a laugh that was contagious. He loved the Lord, always put his faith foremost in everything he did, and never shied away from sharing his testimony with those around him. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Saturday, March 16, 2024 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
