Charles Anson
Blades, Sr.
Feb 28, 1936 — Jul 17, 2020
Charles Anson Blades, Sr, 84, of Newport News, met his Creator July 17, 2020 following a brief illness. Born February 28, 1936, he was the son of the late Arthur and Clem Dewese Blades and grew up in Lumberton, NC with his four brothers and two sisters who are now deceased.
Charles Anson Blades, known as "Charlie" to friends and relatives, is survived by his spouse of forty years, Mary Elizabeth Blades; his two sons, Charles Anson Blades, Jr. and Jeffrey (Keke) of York, SC; and his stepdaughter Cheryl Ann Arenas (Pablo) of Williamsburg. He has two grandchildren, Nina Blades Murdock (Jonathan) and Peyton Blades, both of York, SC. He was also blessed with several nieces and nephews. Charlie was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished by his family and friends.
A veteran of the US Air Force, Charlie owned and operated Blades Refrigeration in Newport News. Charlie actively directed the maintenance of the heating and refrigeration system for Temple Baptist Church and considered it a part of his important ministry for Jesus Christ. A deacon and usher for Temple Baptist Church, Charlie was also active in the men's Sunday School Class and the welcoming committee. He began the Friday night bluegrass jamborees in the fellowship hall as a church outreach. This ministry has sustained itself with his direction for 14 years.
Charlie was a conservative and repurposed everything. One of his favorite activities was driving his John Deer tractor creating a rural homestead for him and Mary on their farm in Olin, NC.
Charlie was a lifelong Cowboy fan. He enjoyed his McDonald's breakfast club buddies and loved his neighbors. He adored his family and lived life to the fullest everyday with optimism and enthusiasm.
Due to the Covid-19 virus, a private memorial service will be held as a tribute to Charlie.
