Obituary

Carol Ann Ward, 71, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia.

Born on January 31, 1954, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Carol brought warmth and joy into the lives of those around her from the very beginning. Over the years, she built a life rooted in love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her family and friends.

Carol was a woman of many passions. She found great joy in vacationing with her loved ones in the Outer Banks—a place that held countless cherished memories. Whether strolling along the shoreline or simply enjoying time together under the sun, these trips were among her most treasured experiences. Her love for shopping and antiquing reflected her keen eye for beauty and detail, which also shone through in her talent for home decorating. Her home was always a welcoming space filled with warmth and charm.

Above all else, Carol was devoted wife, mother and "nana". She is lovingly remembered by her son, Andrew Ward, daughter Heather Townsend and son-in-law Jeff Townsend; her grandchildren Sophia and Dylan who were her absolute pride and joy. Her deep love for her family was evident in every aspect of her life.

Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Jerry Ward; her mother Dorothy Aguniga; father Richard Aguniga; sister Marci Heithoff; and brother Raymond Alator.

Those who knew Carol will remember her as loving, selfless, hardworking, and deeply dedicated to those she held dear. Her presence brought comfort and strength to many, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

2 Timothy 4:17

But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In honor of Carol's life and spirit, we reflect on the words of Henry Van Dyke:

I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze,
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength,
and I stand and watch her until she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says: "There! She's gone!"
Gone where?

Gone from my sight – that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side,
and just as able to bear her load of living freight
to the place of her destination.
Her diminished size is in me, and not in her.

And just at the moment
when someone at my side says: "There! She's gone!"
there are other eyes that are watching for her coming;
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout:
"Here she comes!"

May Carol's memory bring peace and comfort to all who carry her in their hearts. We love you, Mom and Nana.
