Obituary

Carol Diane Godfrey Shepherd, 76, died Monday, August 4, 2025 at her home. Diane was a long-time resident of Newport News, VA, but was born and raised in Matoaka, WV. She was the only daughter of Weldon and Beatrice Godfrey. Diane graduated with honors from Matoaka High School and graduated with an English Education degree from Concord College in Athens, WV. After college graduation, Diane moved to Newport News, VA to pursue a teaching career. She taught both high school and community college English for many years.

Diane was a devoted member of Charles Church Christian Life Center in Yorktown, VA where she enjoyed attending weekly church services for many years until her heath declined. She considered the other church members as her "extended family." Her immediate family would especially like to thank Pastors Evans and Mary Beth Powell and Elizabeth Moore for their unwavering support, care, and assistance to Diane during difficult times.

Diane rarely met a stranger and carried a very jovial spirit and the light of Christ in her heart. She could recite many Bible verses and enjoyed studying, reading, and discussing Scripture. In her younger years, she enjoyed spending time at the beach and taking trips to the Outer Banks of NC with her husband, Randy. Over the years, Diane also loved working in her yard, as well as, caring for her pets and considered them a very special part of her life.

Besides her parents, Diane is preceded in death by her spouse Randy Shepherd. She is also preceded in death by brothers Weldon "Buddy" Godfrey (Linda), Randy Godfrey, and nephew-in-law, Chad Eddy.

Survivors include brother, William "Bill" Godfrey (Judi), along with nieces Kimberly Roth (Mike), Melissa Eddy and nephews Weldon Godfrey II (Jennifer) and Andrew Godfrey. Other survivors include a great nephew, Daniel Godfrey and great niece, Emily Roth.
