Carl Anderson Settle, 96, departed this life on Sunday, September 4, 2022, in Hampton, VA.
He was born in Williamsburg, VA on November 21, 1925, the fourth of six children, to John Frank Settle and Mary Louise Oglesby. He was 1942 graduate of The Matthew Whaley School, a veteran of WWII (C/276/70 ID), and a dedicated Civil Service employee at Fort Eustis and Fort Monroe, VA until his retirement in 1984.
He married Mary Elizabeth German in 1956 and the couple moved to Hampton. Carl was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. In retirement, he enjoyed research and genealogy. Carl had a generous heart, an incredible memory and an interest in people's lives.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, siblings, and wife. Survivors include his daughters, Kathy Ewell (Richard Byrd), and Rebecca Holliday; five grandchildren, Dara Renaghan (Brian), Carl Young (Alice), Erin Golden (Timothy), Allen Holliday (Kaitlyn), and Caitlin Harrah (Benjamin), and eight great-grandchildren (with a ninth on the way).
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park. Please leave online condolences at www.wjsmithandson.com.
