Burnley R.
Doxey, Jr.
d. Nov 6, 2022
Burnley R. Doxey, Jr., 94, passed away at his home in Newport News on Sunday, November 6, 2022 with his family by his side. "Bunny", as he was known to his family and friends, was the only child of the late Burnley R. Doxey, Sr. and Mary Williamson Doxey.
Bunny was born on May 7, 1928 in Norfolk. During his teens, he loved sailing his Hampton One Design #32 around Willoughby. He graduated from Fishburne Military School, Waynesboro, VA, class of 1947. He graduated from the Technical Institute, College of William & Mary, class of 1950. He began working for Civil Service later that year and retired from ATL, Ft. Eustis in 1985. Also, he enlisted in the Virginia National Guard, June 1948 and retired in August 1974 with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
In 1948, Bunny met Mary Nixon Powell on a blind date. She was known to her friends and family as "Tommie" and they were married on July 28, 1951.
In his early years, Bunny was a model builder (RC planes and boats) and later he preferred golf. He was a Mason, Warwick Lodge and a Shriner, Khedive Temple. For many years he was a member of the Oriental Band and the Golf Club which were many happy times.
For thirty years the family vacationed together at South Nags Head, NC and the memories fill many scrapbooks. He truly was an honorable man, fiercely loyal to his family and all he held dear.
Bunny is survived by his wife, Mary P. "Tommie" Doxey; daughters, Candis Brooks Karpa of Newport News, Deborah Randolph Doxey and her husband, John D. Taylor of Merritt Island, FL; three grandchildren, Alex Randolph Taylor, Shelley Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, Josh Pagano, of Merritt Island, FL; Stephen Lawrence Karpa, Jr. of Seaford ; and Tommie Randolph Taylor, a very special great-granddaughter; and a cousin, Sharon Woodard and her family of Norfolk. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Stephen L. Karpa, Sr., of Seaford.
Without the care from Bunny's daughter, Candy, it would not have been possible for him to remain in his home. We were also fortunate to have Melissa Bryant, for eighteen months who took over the night time duty and a whole lot more. She and Bunny formed a close bond that added to the quality of his life and ours. We wish to thank Riverside Hospice, especially, Denise Cyrus, who was so kind to "Mr. Bunny" and RN Melani, for her kindness and concern and the caregivers from Bayada.
Family services will be at a later date.
