She was preceded in death by both of her parents, Lee Edward James and Alice Jane Martin Maitland, seven sisters, two brothers, one step grandson, one great granddaughter and her loving and devoted husband of 73 years William H. Everyone who knew Bernice felt her warm and loving spirit with her genuine way of making people feel special. She was a faithful member of Menchville Baptist Church serving in many capacities. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, President of Women of the Church and Vacation Bible School Director for many years at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hampton. Her faith was strong, and she shared the love of Jesus through her many hugs and smiles every Sunday morning as a greeter. She was known to everyone in the church as the "Best Hugger". Her beautiful smile and loving spirit will long be remembered by her family and all who knew her. She exemplified "God's Best" as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, and "Nana" always placing the care of others before herself. Her legacy of hard work, love and compassion will follow her and live on in the lives of those who were blessed to know her and those close to her. She will surely be missed by everyone who knew her.
